I think the election of Donald Trump is something that has shaped our generation and particularly the way that I view and engage in politics. For many adults (millennial and older), the Trump administration stuck out as an abnormality in American politics, a stark diversion from precedence, it was the first presidential administration that our generation was keenly aware of. (We were all obviously alive for Bush/Obama, but this was the age where we started to understand our political system and what being president really entails). I think for our generation having the Trump administration be the first administration we could critically engage with has shaped our view of ‘normal’ American politics. For me personally, I certainly see the Trump administration as the product of our history and what used to be considered ‘normal’ American politics and that makes me more inclined to think outside of our political system as we know it. I think a similar mentality applies broadly to our generation, in that I think we tend to push the boundaries of what is possible in our lifetime and like to challenge both the norms and the systems themselves.
